I am putting bearings in my 4000 ford it has the 201 gas engine. Can anyone tell me if there is a trick to get the rear main cap out? Do you have to split the tractor? I have the other main caps out and the rod caps out, I just can't get the rear main cap out.

Thanks,
Andy

You should be able to drop that cap, although it will be a little tougher than the others because of the cap side seals. You might possibly hook a slide hammer up to the two threaded holes.

Your biggest challenge however will be keeping the rear main seal aligned when you put it back together. It is pressed into a bore that is part of that cap.

Thanks for the info. I got the rear main out. I can not get the crank to turn and I have had all of the main caps off. Right now I have the 1st and 3rd main caps on the tractor to hold the crank up in place. I have had the first two rod caps off and the bearings didn't look too bad. I have the nuts off the back rod and can tap the piston up by tapping on the rod bolts but I can't get the rod cap off because that throw on the crank is up and I can't get the crank to turn. What can be binding the crank up like this. I do have the tractor in nuetral and have the spark plugs out.
Thanks,
Andy

Andy` look for any thing that runs off the moter, try tying down the clutch pedal(hyd pump), camshaft locked up? Just a thought. Good luck. Kevin.

Don't know the answer to the question, but why are you just installing bearings ? If the rod bearings are really worn, plus you haven't done a ring job for a long time, you are taking a chance on breaking a piston. Best in that case to do rings and bearings. My $.02

The guy I bought the tractor from ran it low on oil and it scarred up the bearings. The tractor only has 1300 hours on it, so for now I am just trying to get away with putting bearings in it. I have looked at all the crank journals except the back one and they are all good, so I am hoping that bearings will do for now.

You're probably ok as long as the history and hours are correct, and the bearings were not really worn. If in doubt, pull the head and check for a cylinder ridge. If it's there, I would not take a chance, and I would install new rings just to be on the safe side. A broken ring land can really cause major problems.

If that bad boy was run out of oil odds are she's locked up tighter than a bull's butt in fly season. It could be the cam is seized in it's bearings, or the pistons seized in their bores, ect.. It's time to split that tractor and tear that engine down. It does not matter how low the engine hours are if you run them out of oil they lock up.
