Why won't the crank turn?

I am working on a 201 gas engine in a 4000 Ford. The crank won't turn. I just bought this tractor and supposedly all it needed was bearings. I have had all the main caps off and currently I only have the 1st and 3rd caps on the tractor to hold the crank in place. I have had the first two rod caps off and can push the pistons up so they are not stuck. I have the nuts off the back rod and can tap the piston up by tapping on the rod bolts, but I can't get the rod cap off because that throw on the crank is turned up. I can't get the crank to turn and I have the tractor in neutral and have the spark plugs out. I put the tractor in high gear and tried to rock it back and forth but still no luck. What could be causing the engine to be locked up like this?
Thanks, Andy

Had a similar thing when repairing a magneto. After repairing mag I found that engine was locked up. Took mag apart again and found that when placing armature on workbench i had allowed it to pick up a lockwasher. Magneto was locked thus engine would not turn, It is a miracle that i did not ruin something. Another time has Chev truck which had engine appearing to be locked up but sll that was seised was a wrist pin.

Is the starter still on it and locked up? Does the hydraulic pump run off the cam gear and locked up? Does the clutch disengage, and does it roll in neutral? Anything driven off the front of the crank?

Rick is right. Even if none of those accessories Rick mentioned is not locked up, you have too many things still attached to the crank including the cam gear to be able to easily turn it over. But....if nothing is locked up, you still should be able to get a strong screw driver or crow bar jammed into the flywheel ring gear teeth and ratchet the crank around using the engine block for leverage. My $.02

The starter is still on the tractor. I will take it off tonight and go from there. That may just be the problem. I am going to work on it this weekend and hopefully get it figured out. Thanks for the advice guys, I will let you know what happens.

Andy;
There are holes in the crank that supply oil from the pump to the bearings.
In the past I have put something in a hole to rotate a bearing insert out of the block(when I had the cap off). Hopefully someone has not done something like this and left it in the hole where it got caught between the crank and block hole.
This senario is very far fetched but is a possibility, I have seen screwier things.
Just another idea.
Jim

If someone has had the bearing caps off before they might have mixed them up and not put them back on the same journals. These are line bored and if they are swapped the bearing will bind.

I once bought a car that a friend had "overhauled" and done this. We towed the car and it did nothing but skid the wheels.

Hi Gary,
I too learned this the hard way. Always keep the rod caps and main caps matched exactly as they come apart; won't work otherwise. Rick H. Ga.

Hi Rick,

I forgot to mention too that not only do they need to be on the same journal but they need to be turned the right way too. Reversing the cap on the same bearing will also cause it to not line up. Bearing caps should always be marked with a chisel or something to make a mark on the cap and what it fits to so those marks line up exactly. Then you are sure you have the right orientation.

Gary

I found out why the crank wouldn't turn. That number 3 rod that I couldn't get to had spun the bearing. Once I finally got this out the engine would turn just fine. I thought the crank was chewed up but after I got to looking it just had the bearing facing built up on it. After two hours of working with emery paper and transmission fluid the crank looks pretty good. Thanks for everyone's help on this.
