I'm looking at buying a Ford 3600 Diesel tractor. I'm not sure what year it is. The owner has repainted it and it has new tires. Is 7500.00 to much?

Hi Keith,

I just bought a 1983 Ford 2310 (similar to 2600) Diesel / PS / ROPS / Differential Lock / Hydraulic Oil Cooler and a foot throttle with 472 original hours. I paid $7300 for it and have decided it is one the best investments I have ever made. I love it. I have an 8N I have had for about 25 years. The 2310 is a Cadillac compared to the 8N. The guy I bought it from said it was a 1986 model but I found out it was 1983 based on the SS#. However, I’m not going to hold that against him because the tractor is in excellent condition. HTH. ford 3600 1976 to 1981.. check serial numbers to be sure its not a 3000...

1976 good condition is 4380..

1981 in good condition is 7730..

so minus the new paint,, what year is it?
what are the hours on it?
what kind of shape is it?
steering tight or has play?
rear links.. worn and bushing at axle have play? or very tight..
check engine start only when cold... feel the manifold to make sure it hasnt been started.. if it starts good cold.. its got good compression.. does it smoke?? white/grey??
does the smoke go away as it warms up..
it should blow black when you floor it.. but not white or grey.. at 1000 rpm.. listen to the exhaust pipe.. smooth or poping??

is the rubber new or worn out..(although this is the easiest to replace), it tells how many hours on the tractor.. do all the tire makes and brands match?? on a low hour tractor they should.. normally you should get 3000 hour or more on a set of tires..

i would always buy a tractor that HAS NOT been painted before i buy on that has... then you can see all the leaks.. and yes they all ozose a little .. it only when they steam clean and repaint them that you wonder what they are trying to hide... are the pedals and seat well worn?? steering wheel and other controls??
drive it in all gears,, press the brakes lightly to load it and then harder to test the brakes... are the axle seals leaking at the rear???

does the pto really pull a load or just spin??..
paint and rubber are the last things you look at as they are the easiest to fix... ckeck the radiator for oil and condition,,ie rust.. check the dipstick for signs of foaming or white goo caused by a cracked block or blown head gasket.. check the all the fluid levels...

dont buy it if you cant drive it.. if it looks good.. drive it some more... and some more..

7500 maybe high depending on year.. and for that money every thing should work.. not be new, but work and work well.. no repairs needed and it should be an 80 or 81 model.. to get that price..
