Hi all, I have a 1965 Ford 4000 LCG (3Cyl) SOS tractor. This is the golf course type with dual 8.20-24 turfs on the rear and 9.00-10's on front. I have read, but not heard for sure, that the LCG had a different final gear ratio due to the small dia. rear tires. Does anyone know for sure? I am considering putting full size Ag. tires on back. It also appears the front spindle's/axal's are shorter? Does anyone have experience converting a LCG to an all-purpose? Any information would be most appreaciated. It is an SOS transmission (that works great by-the-way) so has a very low first gear(s). Sincerely, Donzil in New Mexico.

I just looked in a new ford factory manual set on the 4000 series and don't see any difference in any of the models for the rear end ratio. They do show that there are some differences in the LCG rear end model but it appears it is in the construction of the differential assembly and not in the ratio.

They show the ratio for the 4000 with 4, 6, 8, and 7 speed transmissions as 14.75
The 10 speed transmission has a rear end ratio of 30.00

STANDARD LCG

For production code "C" they show the LCG as standard rear wheels as: W7x24 tire 8.3x24 4ply.
Front wheel Standard for LCG: 4.50x13 tire 6.50x13 4ply

They say to only use these rear wheels with the 13 in front wheels.

OPTIONAL LCG

Rear wheel optional on LCG: W16-16 16 rim tire 18.4x16 6ply
Front wheel LCG 4.0x16 tire 6.0x16 4ply

They say to only use these rear wheels with the 16 in front wheels.

STANDARD ALL PURPOSE

Rear wheels: W11x36 tire 12.4x36 4ply
Front wheels: 4.0x16 tire 6.0x16 4ply

OPTIONAL ALL PURPOSE

Several optional rear wheels from 36, 38, 30, 26

I could not find any reference to different length front spindles but there must be different ones. The parts manual would probably tell that.

The parts manual would tell if there is any different gear ratios as well.

Regards
Gary

Definitely a different ring & pinion. Also front 'knees' and spindles. We service a 'converted' 4110 3cyl, has an industrial loader bred onto it, too. Goes about 30 MPH, goofy looking with orig front end parts & 28" rears, basically a morphidite. You really need to swap out the rear axle center section, or at least all of its internals to make anything like what you have in mind.

Rick,
Thank you very much for the info, I was afraid that would be the case. Guess I would be better off selling this LCG and get a all-purpose tractor.
Thank you again for taking the time to reply.
Sincerely, Donzil in New Mexico.

I wouldn't give up on it just yet. I have put 28" rear tires on a 2000 LCG and it has worked fine for many years, plowing discing etc. I changed the front tires to 16", they were 13". Yes the spindles are shorter and it may still be slightly "downhill", but it works OK. The only thing I notice is that in a very tight turn the 16" tire may rub slightly on the radius rod. I bought a pair of the long spindles at an auction for $25 some time ago but haven't gotten around to putting them on. The gear ratio is different, but with the SOS you should be OK. Do you have a pair of 24" or 28" rims you could temporarily try from another tractor to see how you like the way it performs? Good luck.
