It doesn't say in the book but if my memory serves me correctly the last time I put bearings in a car engine (18 years ago) there was a top bearing and a bottom the top had a hole to allow the oil thru a hole in the bearing. The 2000 I bought with bad engine has 100 pounds of compression but oil gauge wasn't registering any thing, pulled the Main bearing cap and it has a oil grove with a hole thru the bearing, really rough shape, not smooth and worn, raggety wear, sure not the same as the top end reads, I believe some one put bearing's on the crank and reversed the bearing's because the bottom cap had a hole in the bearing, the oil comes thru the engine block I believe down thru the hole in the bearing from the top to lube the crank, well if they both top and bottom of the bearing's have holes I am wrong, I have to pull the crank to see the top bearing so if some bearing expert could tell me if the main bearing have a top and bottom one with a oil hole or if both bearing's have this hole

You should be able to remove the upper main bearing shell by taking a screwdriver and tapping on the edge of it and walk it right around the crank. If it is really stuck tight, back off all the other main cap bolts about two turns so the crank will drop down slightly.

If it is a 4-cylinder 2000 the top and bottom bearings are the same. If it is a 3-cylinder 2000, the top main has an oil hole and grove, while the bottom has neither a hole nor a grove.

Im not sure in a car eng the bearing with a grove and hole they have to be in the block ive got a 64 4000 i only put rod bearings in it did not even pull crank.same thing as a car eng need a hole in block bearing to tranfer oil into the crank.you may be able to role top bearings out and role new ones in. but if the bearing is showing copper or worn on one half scraped you will have to pull the crank and send it out.

Steve:
I have removed the upper insert by taking a short bolt or screw with a shank that will fit into the oil hole in the crankshaft, grind the head thin enough that it is a little thinner than the insert. put the bolt shank into the oil hole and rotate the crankshaft utilizing the head of the bolt to push the insert around and out. You can reinstall the insert using the same method.
You may only be able to rotate the insert in one direction because it may have a tab on it.
Hope this helps,
Jim
