Hello,
I have a 72 3000 gas & when cold it has a knocking noise at the rear of the engine that sounds like it coming from about the mid to upper area. The noise will go away after about 15 mins of running. I checked the rod bearings and they didn't see any problems ,but I replaced them anyways and also the piston pins didn't appear to have any play in them. I also ran the engine with the rocker cover off & the noise wasn't coming from there. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

It sounds to me like it is either your rod bearings or wrist pin clearances are worn out of spec. Even if you replaced the rod bearings if you did not check the crank for proper wear you would still have the knocking. The knock goes away once you get good oil flow to the area or heat expands the offending parts enough to tighten-up the clearances. If you run a heavier oil or a additive may help but ultimately your probably looking at a rebuild....
