Here's what I did.....When I got my '64 4000 4 cyl. gas, I saw a pull switch on the right side, just above where my right knee is when stiitng in the seat.....I ass-m-me'd that someone had "rigged" this to be the ignition switch..... My ole farmer neighbor was over looking at her, and I told him that - He is still laughing at me....There, just on the opposite side, above my left knee, low & behold, a key switch! It was ignorance on my part....hee hee

I would do as others suggest - trace backwards from the coil...

Good Luck!

So, did the lights come on the first time? :)

There has to be a switch, or how would they shut the tractor off?????

Actually, no, because the battery was gone.....Sure worked when I got another battery and got juice to them..... Been working ever since...

Rick is right. The button on the transmission just spins the starter. The key switch sends power to the points. Won't run otherwise.

Often the key switch goes bad. A common repair over the years has been to replace the key switch with a toggle switch. Look for a toggle switch somewhere.

If someone wired the points to be hot all the time you'd eventually burn up the points or drain the battery. Gotta be a switch of some kind somewhere. Try following the wires backwards from the coil back to the switch. When I first got my tractor it had a toggle switch wired into the line, not mounted to anything, just wrapped with about 6 coats of electrical tape. It has a key switch now!

Button just runs starter, switch turns on the juice. Gotta be there.
