I recentley bought a 1993 1720, 4-wheel drive tractor, and was wondering who makes a good backhoe attachment, and which size best fits this tractor.

I've been using a Kelly 3ph 6' hoe on my 1710 for almost five years. The hoe isn't especially strong and is less expensive than many. My needs are occasional and fairly light duty. The hoe has worked OK for me.

A 6' hoe digs a 2' bottom at 6' so the tractor can't dig very wide deep holes. It also means moving the tractor frequently for deep trenching. Irrespective of the size of tractor, it's good to take a look at what kind of hoe work needs to be done and then get a hoe that will meet most of the needs in an acceptable time. It's usually better to figure on contracting the bigger projects. A good second step then is figuring if the size hoe needed is suitable for the tractor.

The comments about 3ph mounts being hard on a tractor should be kept in mind. I've heard a story abut a 1720 with a 3ph hoe in rental service. The tractor broke in half at the case joints. I take it easy with mine and don't dig when the hoe is extended. I'm also not too concerned that the relief valve on the hoe may be set a little weak. I sure wouldn't want to put a bigger or stronger 3ph hoe on my 1710 and I'd probably want to stick with 6' in a sub-frame mount as well. The older type sub-frame mounts that probably are the only things available for a 1710 can be a real pain.

Try Bush Hog or Land Pride or Great Bend. I would get one that had a subframe mount option as it will be hard on your tractor otherwise. They are very expensive. small units can cost $ 5,000.00 to $7,000.00
