I HAVE CHANGED MY TRACTOR OVER TO 12 VOLT WITH THE 10SI GM ALTERNATOR, I INSTALLED A SIDE MARKER LIGHT IN SERIES WITH THE IGN. SWITCH, SO AS TO BE ABLE TO TURN ENGINE OFF. SHOULD THE SIDE MARKER LIGHT STAY LIGHTED WHILE ENGINE IS RUNNING? ALSO, I HAVE TO RACE THE ENGINE TO NEARLY FULL THROTTLE BEFORE THE ALT. STARTS TO CHARGE, IS THIS NORMAL?
THANKS FOR ANY HELP.

I used a diode rather than a light bulb. The diode is extremely inexpensive and much more durable than a light bulb. The commercial conversion kits come with a diode. I have the schematics for using a diode if you want them. The advantage is that the alternator will charge at low RPM's which is very important for a tractor. (There is an excellent website posted by a 4000 owner, which includes his wiring diagrams.)

If you still have charging problems, you may need to change the side of the pulley on the alternator. A car is normally running at higher RPM's than a tractor.

Hope this helps,
Tim

THANKS TIM I THINK I MAY TRY A DIODE FOR THE HECK OF IT, I LIKE THAT BETTER THAN LIGHT IN SERIES ANY WAY, THE THING SEEMED OK UNTIL I CHANGED THE IGN. SW. I DID REWIRE IT ACCORDING TO THE DIAGRAMS ON THE N SERIES BOARD. BEFORE IT HAD A THREE POLE SW. THAT ELIMATED THE NEED FOR A DIODE OR MARKER LIGHT. THANKS FOR YOU REPLY.

I used 6 amp 50 PIV Rectifier diodes from Radio Shack. They are cheap and more than you need. A one amp diode would work. I also installed a fuse box in place of the voltage regulator to use blade type fuses.

Does the light ever go off? It should go off as soon as the alternator starts charging. If it doesn't, something's wrong.

If it does go off when the charging starts, but you want to start charging at a lower RPM, you could try a different bulb in the socket. (If the bulb doesn't let enough current pass, you'll need more RPM to start charging.)

JIM WI THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY. IN ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION, THE LIGHT NEVER GOES OFF, AND YOU HAVE TO RACE ENGINE QUIET HIGH TO GET ALT. TO CHARGE, EVEN AFTER IT STARTS TO CHARGE IT ONLY SHOWS ABOUT 13.4 VOLTS THE HIGHEST. AFTER READING THE ARCHIVES, I THINK I MAY HAVE A BAD REGULATOR, DIODE, DIODE BRIDGE, OR RECTIFIER. CHECKING THE BAT. WITH VOLTMETER, IT SHOWS A 1.5 VOLT DRAIN. (VOLT METER IN SERIES WITH GROUND STRAP AND BAT. NEG. POST)

Sure sounds like something's wrong with the alternator -- I can't think of any wiring errors that would cause these symptoms. Since the 10SI is a self-contained charging system, it's easy to take it to a parts store for testing. Most good sized parts stores can test one. That's what I'd do next.

That is how mine acted when the battery was pretty well discharged. Now that the battery is charged I only have to get it up to 1000 RPM to get the light to go out and then I can return it to idle and the light will still be off.
