Ford 2000 engine missing

I recently bought a 1970 Ford 2000 tractor (gas 3 cyl). It had sat for over a year with no use from the owner. We change the gas and cleaned all the gas filters. We got it started and it misses very badly. It is definatly a electrical miss. I have changed the spark plugs, condenser, points, distributer cap and spark plug wires. It misses until you put pressure on the #1 spark plug wire where it comes out of the distributer cap or hold the coil wire down firmly on the distributer. If you hold one of those down or twist them a certain way it purr's like a kitten. Messing around with the other spark plug wires makes no difference at all! Does any one have any ideas? Thanx in advance.

You should also change the rotor (you did not say you did), then I would bet that the spark plug wire end is not in good contact with the copper core inside of the insulation. Switch wires making sure you keep the right firing order and see if the miss follows the #1 wire. If so, then it's the wire. Cut an inch or so off the end of the wire and reinsert the wire contact making sure it is in contact with the copper core. If it is not the wire, and if the distributor cap is seating properly and has no apparent cracks (note: I have had lots of experience with bad brand new parts including bad brand new distributor caps), then I would suspicion a bad distributor shaft bushing which is allowing the rotor to move away intermittently from the distributor cap contact breaking the connection. That's my $.02

everything above and also look on top and bottom of cap for jumping spark.. particularly on top... explaning why maybe when you push down, ,the spark no longer is jumping or the cap/rotor is bad.... pull the cap and wipe clean of all residue with a clean tee shirt... no mositure, no oils, no dirt.....on the underside,, make sure all the little lines are dry and clean or the spark can jump... look for any really faint carbon trails... and or run the tractor at night and you will be amazed at the fire jumping around..

check the rotor to make sure its clean and polished.. and the button un the center lead of the cap is still spring loaded and did not fall out... so it contacts the rotor when the cap is down in postion... and

the one wire... trim it back where you have 1/8th of an inch of center wire,/carbonstring or what ever,, and make sure its either in the little copper end clamp and the clamp is tight when it fits down into the cap and the rubber cap is pushed down very tight over the dist cap...

goodlook on you wild goose chase but remember.. this goose can bite... Bill
