could some help me with the pump timing on a cav from a 4500? removed it for a rebuild in 15 degree temps! will be done soon.please respond with any info. thanks

Doug,
The only provision for changing timing is slotted holes in the the pump mounting flange. Align the scribed mark on the pump flange with "0" on the rear side of the engine front cover plate. On older units you can rotate the pump housing to the "2" to compensate for wear. Rotate the top of the pump housing outwards (against the direction of pump rotation) to advance it an additional two degrees. If you're checking timing with a diesel timing light, you should be looking for about 22 degrees BTDC at idle. The pump drive shaft hub can only be installed one way in the pump gear; there's a dowel. The gears can't get out of time unless the timing gear cover has been removed. Crank gear, idler gear and pump gear have timing marks. Pump gear will have two marks "3" for 3 cylinder engines, "4" for four cyls. This applies only to distributor type pumps. In-line pumps are a little different. Repair manuals talk about a timing spec of 255 or 270 degrees; this is the spec used by an injection pump repair shop to scribe a new mark on the pump mounting flange.

thankyou much..... you are the man..... ..i did remove the timing cover to remove the 3 bolts that hold the gear to the pump shaft.However i don,t beleive there is enough clearance in the gear housing to actually move the gear a tooth withou pulling it out of the housing and re-inserting it....i hope!..... do you agree? you were very helpfull ...thankyou
