Another one of my stupid questions but here goes. Sometimes when I turn ignition the key I get a single click. Not like the multiple clicks you hear sometimes from a solenoid. I go though several cycles of this, turn the key off, back on, single click each time, then it will start normally. I guess the question is, if the safety switch is bad would you get a click at all? Or is it more likely the ignition switch or something else. I've checked the connections pretty close. This tractor will start in gear and almost ran over me one time. Now my young sons are driving it so I want to at least fix the safety switch. I appreciate any suggestions.

Hugh, the copper washer inside the solenoid or the studs it contacts are probably pitted.A new solenoid would most likely fix it.I would fix the neutral start switch ASAP.It is located under the plate that has gear shift levers if not a sos tranny. You don't want to take a chance getting you or your kids hurt!!!!Jim B

Hugh,

After reading your message, it doesn't sound like your neutral safety switch is working ("This tractor will start in gear and almost ran over me one time."). That leads me to believe that this is not the cause of your starting problems, but let's not rule it out yet. Normally when a solenoid clicks multiple times, it is because the battery voltage is less than adequate to keep the solenoid engaged. Some things I would suggest that you check with a Volt/Ohm meter is: 1)Battery voltage/condition (Battery voltage should be around 12.0-12.6 volts at rest, 13.0-14.5 volts while charging and if possible have battery load tested), 2)Battery cables (loose terminals, corroded terminals, bad ground, etc....), 3)Voltage from ignition switch to starter solenoid while attempting to start (Make sure tractor is in neutral!!!), 4)Voltage from battery through solenoid to starter while attempting to start (Again, make sure tractor is in neutral!!!). If these items all check out, then I would start looking at the starter itself. It is possible that the windings in the armature are bad, the brushes are shot or the bendix is binding up on you. Hope this helps.
