shell rotella 15w-40, mobile delvac 1300 15w-40 and chevron delo 15w-40 are all severe use oils designed for heavy duty applications for diesels and for gas engines.. they meet the new ci-4 spec for diesels and the sf spec for spark engines,, more importantly they are designed to nutrualize acids that are formed from moisture getting into the engines and to go for extended changes of up to 35000 miles in the heavy duty over the road engines and 12000 miles in the regular engines. The are especially designed to keep the top rings clean and in good shape while providing excellent wear and oil consumption ratings..

the only problem is that they are loaded with special detergents and nuetralizers that literly will clean all the gunk out of existing engine the first time they are used.. so change the oil at least yearly the FIRST time, and then either based on hours or bi yearly would be a good schedule next time. But dont worry if you go beyond that for tractors that dont get used much, because the oils will stand up to storage and still resist the acids and moisture very well. Using these oils now enables the heavy duty over the road trucks to get more than a million miles out of their engines between overhauls. You can now expect more than 10,000 hours, or even up to 16,700 hours is being seen between overhauls do to the low rpms(under 2500 rpm) and great oil availible.

these oils can be had at most wallmarts for about $6 a gallon, but are usually in a different place than the regular oil. Sam's sell the rotella t by the case for $5.xx a gallon in 4 gallon lots.

In the 70's and 80's for a short time, some gasket materials had silicon in them. all modern day oils will cause these gaskets to deteriorate. so try to buy either very old style (cork) or very new style gaskets to avoid weepy gaskets..

This is definately not your grandads' oil..

good luck, Bill

Brian,

First let me say that I'm strictly a Shell 15w40 Rotella kind of guy, but I'm a diesel kind of guy, too. Only things gas I've got are "that woman's car" and some lawn quip (all of these get 10w30 Quaker State or straight 30 QS). Used to have some gas tractors and used the SAE 30 QS in them. A lot of folks would have you believe that you should use "only the best". Use a good quality modestly priced oil for gas engines, and keep it changed! Old oil sitting in a crankcase, even with just a few hours deteriorates. Water from condensation will form organic acids in any oil used any length of time. How often you change the oil is much more important than the oil brand, as long as it meets the SAE and API grades your engine manufactorer specifies.

Our 1970 Ford 3000 has had Shell oil in it since new. Used to be able to get straight 30W and 10W. Summer and winter usage. Now I can only get 10W-30 which is changed each season. I've yet to put any additional oil in from season to season. Excellent results. I'd never use anything else.
Excellent engine and tractor.
Good Luck,

Brian,

You should check your owner's manual for the recommended oil, in '67 Ford would have still been recommending straight weight oils for use in their engines and your owner's manual or shop manual will give you the proper weight for prevailing tempatures. I own a '98 Ford tractor that still carries the straight weight oil recomendations on a decal under the hood.

Not all engines, especially those built in '67, tolerate the use of multiweight oils well and some are engineered to use nothing but a multi-weight oil, such as the modern automotive engines.

Good luck.

Mike

As has been hashed out here MANY times, do not follow the Operators Manual for older tractors as to the oil specifications. The manuals were written to match oil properties, specifications, and refining techniques that were in effect at the time the tractor was manufactured. Use the latest specifications of oil.

Tom,
Good to hear your opinion, of course you should understand, that's all it is, your opinion, you're entitled to it.

I hope you don't mind if I continue to use the oil that Ford recommends in my tractors. As I said, in my 1998 Ford 3415 Diesel Ford recommends using 10 weight oil under certain conditions, 20 weight oil under certain conditions and 30 weight oil under certain conditions. It certainly is a shame that in 1998 Ford engineers didn't have the benefit of your vastly superior knowledge, experience and education.

Now, you're recommending that I take the advice from an anonomyous poster on a discussion board over that of the people who built my tractor. I don't think so. But thank you so much for your opinion.

Mike

Mobil Delvac 1300 14W40 is very good oil for diesel or gas. Available at Costco, AutoZone, and other places.
