I have a 1974 3000 diesel which has every option that was available. This tractor should have a two-stage clutch, but does not behave as though it does. i.e., I must completely depress the clutch to stop the tractor and implement...period. Clutch is properly adjusted. I have heard that the clutch may be frozen as far as the two stages are concerned. Is that possible, and how do I check to see if I have a two stage clutch??? Many thanks, Tom

This is in reply to the two stage clutch possibly being out of whack on a 3000. If you are lucky Tom it will simply be out of adjustment but my 3000 is split in half in my garage and the clutch is being rapaired to replace the pto linkage/fingers that have fatigued/broken. The fingrs aren't expensive but you might be facing having to split it. My pto didn't work at all though.

Assuming that you have the two stage clutch, and have the external linkage adjusted per the book, and you still do not have full live PTO,then you need to adjust the internal clutch fingers. You can adjust the internal fingers for the two stage clutch by removing the steering column and adjust the finger via the hole into the cluth area. There are three fingers to adjust (to around .05" I believe)to set the dual clutches. Good luck. Read the manual on this one.

Many thanks for letting me pick your brains. I'll take a look at my linkage and see what gives. Tom

A frozen or stuck PTO disc will not disengage at all. Not even simultaneously with the main clutch. It is possible, though not likely, you have a 2 stage clutch with the internal adjustments so far out of whack it unloads both discs at once. I have never seen this, but I believe with the proper level of incompetence by the installer it could be achieved. Some 8 speed 2000/3000's had only transmision driven PTO's as did all 4 and 6 speed versions.

It is possible to set the clutch pedal lower by elimating the two stage feature. Look at the rod that goes from the clutch pedal to the lever that goes into the transmission. if there are two holes in the part of the lever that attaches to the clevis it is for a two stage clutch. Use the upper hole for two stage operation - I know that makes the clutch pedal higher.
It is worth checking.
