What is the difference in the 1958 gas engine models- 800 vs 900 series? Or is this too general a question?

I have a 960 and can tell you that the rear axle is the big difference. It has dropped axels by way of gear boxes, this also make the fenders different. Another difference between the older and newer 172 CI engines is that the 01's had higher compression and a bigger carb. I'm sure there is more than that, but that would be the big stuff. I have pics of my working 961 if you would like to see the difference. It is not a show tractor. (I'm still fond of it though)

If you're talking 1958, then you're talking 801 vs 901. As said, they have the same engine and transmission options, but the 901 series is a row crop configuration. The 901 was available with 3 different front ends: Wide front, Tricycle with dual tires and tricyle with single tire. The 801 models came only in an adjustable width wide front end. Both series were called Powermaster. There are significant differences in the rear end design between the two. Other than that, mechanically they're pretty similar. Visually, there's no mistaking a 901 for an 801...even if it has a wide front.

Here's a website that may offer more info.

Jim, thanks you covered it much better than I did, I thought the questions just pertained to the engine. How were the rear ends different?

I've never personally seen a row crop rear taken apart, only pictures. It appears that the axles don't come straight out from the diff to the rear wheel. Rather there is a geared connection there. This seems to allow greater ground clearance. I can't really explain it very well, but if you go to John Smith's 8N website and click on the "Parts for Sale" button, he has some parts listed for 600-900 series. In that section he has some pics of row crop rear axle parts for sale that kind of help show what I'm trying to say.

I "borrowed" these from the Tractor Photos section of this site.

Here's an 801 series.

And this is a 901 with wide front.

This is the same tractor with a dual wheel tricycle front end.

Now, this is not a 901, but rather a 900 series with a single front. I couldn't find a pic of a 901 single tire front. This one is a shot I took of Walt Rose's tractor that he was selling last fall.

Incidentally, the differences between the 800/900 tractors of 1955-57 and the 801/901 tractors of 1958-1961 are mostly cosmetic (paint schemes, grilles, emblems, etc). I believe the later 801/901 had a bit more hp and power steering became more of a factory standard than on the earlier ones.

Hope this helps.

I am new to the bigger Fords but I am pretty confident there is no difference. Both had the same motor gas was a 4 cyl 172 ci. Cant say much about the diesel other than they were also the same. The only dif between these two tractors is the 900 is a high crop.

Tnx all, I just closed a deal on a very nice condition 1958 Ford 901 dual tire, narrow front-end. It came with a culivator, blade & scoup bucket.

Does the cultivator attach to the holes in the frame? I've got a 960, but not sure why the frame has the holes.
