I am in the process of trying to nail down the problems with the steering on the 1955 960 that I just bought. I know that the cylinder needs rebuilding, parts are on order from NH for that. I also think that the steering needs some attention in the shaft assembly itself. There is some play at the wheel not only turning play, but side to side forward, backward kinda play. My I&T shows there is some parts that could be rebuilt just below the steering wheel, some bearings and bushings... I didn't notice this when I ordered the cylinder rebuild kit, I would have ordered it then. Value-Built has no kit listed for this. Anybody know if this is available thru NH or any other place? Anybody with good sources for parts for the 960 please let me know! Thanks! Bill

Bill,I have all the power steering parts off of 59 gold 901 that I could send you some pictures of if that would help. Im not sure, but I dont think that power steering was factory installed untill 57 or 58 on those tractors. Yours, to me, looks like a kit or someone made it to fit your tractor. Ron(IN)

Just looked at my parts book and it shows 55-57 power steering. I have seen alot of these row crops around here with out power steering, mainly 900 models. The drag link and the cyl look the same 55-59 in the book and is possible the same through 64. The book shows 3or4 different pumps and brackets though.Ron(IN)

I just completely tore down my steering gear box and power steering cylinder for my 740. It should be exactly the same. I understand that the bearing below the steering wheel is a common replacement item. I got mine from NH for about $15. It is a cup type bearing not a needle bearing like they sold me on the first visit. You'll probably need the spring and spring seat and dust gasket. Tear the whole thing down and clean with a parts washer. You'll be glad you did. The rebuild kit on the cylinder from NH was a dissapointment. It was about $40 and included only two small seals and snap ring. Mine sat out for about seven years so it needed some work but I think shell work when I put her back together.

Good Luck!

RICK

third party image

Based on what I am reading in I&T this is maybe not the correct power steering cylinder. First off, it dosen't look right. Also the stamped numbers do not appear to be Ford numbers. It shows what appears to be 'V C 285 00', the stamper may have tried to make the V an N tho, the stamp is bad and there is a 9 stamped below and cockeyed to the V. I guess if I stretch it I could make it to be 9N28500 but I doubt that works anyways. Following these numbers there is '1 800 183 86' this is not a phone number. The layout of the cylinder is not matching the images in I&T including the ports for the hoses in the control valve. The linkage from the end of the cylinder to the front drag link end seems homemade. If anybody has info on this cylinder or where I can get rebuild parts for it, please let me know!

I also need some suggestions on how to remove the drag link from the sleeve housing let me know. The nut came off just fine but I cant get the drag link off the ball stud. Thanks! Bill

Doesn't look anything like the setup on my 960. Cylinder or link, but then I'm not positive mine is stock. It appears to be though. If you want, I can take a pic of it and send it to you. I do not know how to post pics in here.

The drag link doesn't look original. If this is causing the problem, or if you want an original one, I noticed that there was one available at:

The cylinder looks correct from the little bit the picture shows but the drag link is homemade.
