I have just purchased a 1964 Ford 4000 Diesel with SOS. I would like to replace all of the fluids. Could you someone tell what kind of fluids to use for the SOS Trans, Hyd and Power steering. And what would be a good additive for the diesel fuel to clean the injectors. I am new to Diesel engines. Any help would be appriciated.

Hi Arlie, Go to your local NAPA Auto Parts Store and get VAVOLINE # 813 10w30 hydraulic oil, you can use it in all three. Use 80w90 gear oil in the rear axle and use a good 15w40 diesel oil in the engine, then get your self a copy of the original owners manual that will tell you all you would like to know about the S.O.S. Trans. Completey DISREGARD Jerry's post below because if Ford wanted you to use it like that they would not have even designed the transmission, the inching pedal is not used for shifting it is used for direction changes, starting, stopping and hitching implements. S.O.S.'s can be shifted at ANY RPM ANY SPEED and ANY LOAD up or down hill or level ground it makes no difference at all. I have a 1962 Ford 4000 AG Tractor Diesel/S.O.S./4X4 with over 6000hrs on it and the inching pedal was broken off almost 20 yrs ago and I have been dragging logs with it for about 10 years now and it has NEVER been apart and I bought it from ther original owner . Thanks Tony Jacobs

All fluids, and in fact the whole tractor is the same as the 801 Ford if it is a 4 cylinder engine. I used to have a 4 cylinder 4000 diesel, and I think it was a 1964, but am not sure. The one thing that is IMPERATIVE with the SOS is to NEVER shift it up and down while under load. Only use the throttle for speed changes when pulling under load or going down hills. Shifting down while plowing when approaching the end of a field has destroyed many a SOS and cost the owners countless thousands of dollars in rebuilds. Another much used practice is shifting up and down to maintain the fastest plowing speed possible while going through a field with varying degrees of toughness of the soil. Set the speed where the engine maintains RPM, and leave it alone. Good luck. I love those 4 cylinder diesels.
I hope that is what you have. I still have 2 of the 861's but never use them.
