I am rebuilding my pump because of slow or no lift in the winter. I replaced all of the inlet and outlet springs and ball valves and followed the I&T manual on the rebuild. I still only get suction from 2 of the 6 pistons. The other four pistons just do not give the "popping" sound when pushed up and down. The I&T manual says this could be caused by leaks at the inlet and/or outlet ball valves. They are new, seem to be seated nicely and the springs are holding them in place. The pistons seem to fit perfectly as well. Any thoughts as to what I am doing wrong? Thanks.

Mike, I agree with Richard; you also need to replace the inlet ball seats and the outlet ball seat plate. There's an expensive little three-jaw puller tool to remove the seats - it breaks easily; suggest you sacrifice a punch by bending it with a couple of gentle S curves and drive the old seats out from the driveshaft end. Usually they drive out quite easily. The new seats may distort slightly when you drive them in; get some extra check balls and "hammer-seat" them on the newly installed seats. Drive the balls onto the seats with a few solid blows with a heavy hammer. Check how the outlet balls seat on the outlet check ball seat plate by holding it up to a light with the balls resting on the seat plate. If you can see light between the balls and the plate you need to "hammer-seat" them also. As Richard said, you can't really tell how a pump is going to work by listening to the popping action. Did you install a new drive shaft seal? Was there a seal groove worn on the shaft? The Ford seal driver special tool positions the seal less deeply in the bore than it was factory installed. The pump won't work well if it can draw air from the engine crankcase instead of oil from the rear axle.
Hope this helps, good luck.

Tex
I drill & tap the old seats to 5/16" unc and pull them out with a little jig I've made.
Just thought I'd share that trade secret.
Regards Richard.

Did you replace the valve seats in the pump body as well as the valve seat plate?
Sometimes you just don't get that popping sound but it works OK once all oiled up, in place and running. You need to bleed it well also.
Wish you luck Richard
