I want to know what is going to give the best spark. 6v coil with resistor or 12v coil with 3 ohms resistance (Napa # IC14). In therory, would'nt 12v give more voltage, therefore bigger spark. Maybe increase gap for larger spark. Thanks for any imput.

In theory, the spark should be same. A coil with a rating of 3 ohms will draw the same current as a 1.8 ohm 6 volt coil in series with a 1.2 ohm externial resistor. The NAPA resistor is rated at 1.2 ohms I believe.

If you want more spark, you will need to decrease the value of the external resistor in series with the 1.8 ohm coil. BE CAREFUL, because if you lower the resistance too much, you will either wind up welding the contacts of the points together or you will cause the points to fail quickly due to excessive pitting.

You can play with the combination a little without major damage. Remember, that increasing or desceasing the spark gap also effects the current.

Impossible to answer without knowing the relative # of windings or listed output voltage on both coils. If you want to improve performance, go to an electronic ignition kit, too. The resisted coil's resistor is placed ahead of the primary windings, so it effectively is in the same place as an external resistor. A "6 volt" coil is just another term for an unresisted coil.

The resistor's job is to lower the voltage which keeps the point's from burning up.
