Hi, I wonder if anyone can help?

I have a 1979 3600 Industrial (yellow paint!).
This has a speedometer for road use, but I have got it to use with a mower, so i need a tacho to get the correct engine rpm for 540 at the PTO.

I got a used 3600 tacho head from a scrap dealer, and have fitted a new cable from the take-off drive by the oil filter.
However, the tacho reads full scale (around 2600rpm) at tickover, and goes off the scale when revs increase. Obviously the gearing is wrong!

Does anyone know if there were diffferent gearings for different years, or if the engine drive gearing is different between the ind and agri versions (I don't see why it should be)?

The numbers on the tacho are:
543 RX D9
D8 NN10849 TB

Any suggestions how to improve things?

Thanks,
William

Just a quick answer without indepth research,
I don't believe I've come accross any different engine driven tacho gear ratio's, perhaps your problem could be you have obtained a generator driven tacho head instead of a camshaft driven one.

Generator driven tachs swing from right to left. Engine driven tachs swing from left to right (zero is on the left). Sounds as if the tach head you have is faulty. I also am not aware of gearing differences between like types..
