I've read that you can check the alternator right off the battery, 12 Volts when off and 14.5 when the motor is running, but can you do the same with the 6v system. 6v when off and ? when the motor is running?

Thanks again for your replys people, you all have been very helpful with my couple questions and appreciate forums like these!

Hey Joe, I have a 641 6V and had a problem that sounds similar to yours. My problem turned out to be with the ground connection on the tractor and not the battery it's self. I went through and cleaned and tightened my connections and that solved my problems with the battery going dead. Apparently I had a high resistance ground connection and the battery wouldn't charge properly. Luck. Joe

Joe, Yep, the voltages expected on a 6 volt system are about half of what you would expect on a 12 volt system. Static non running you should see slightly over 6 V. With the engine running about half throttle you should see somewhere around 7 volts. If your system is stock you have a generator instead of an alternator and generators do not put out too much at idle or low speed.

Ok here's the test results, when i went to start it up it read 6v, after i started it and revved er up it read 6.19-6.21 and stayed there the duration of the test, probably 30 minutes or so...so I guess the alternator is good right? and the second question is, if it sits for a week the battery goes dead dead again what do i do?, is that even possible with a 'good' brand new battery?

6.2 volts more or less when "revved up" is NOT enough. It is not charging properly. Could be generator or could be voltage regulator. By revved up, I'm assuming you mean around 1500 RPM. It should be closer to 7 volts, even 7.1 in that circumstance.

Oh and just out of curiosity I tested the three wires that are coming off the generator and none of them are reading much (.? and .0?) ...so how does it keep the battery charged?

The voltage has to be around 7.2 volts when charging. A charged 6 volt battery can read 6.2 volts. Also consider your meter. If it is not a good quality meter, (ie..professional type), it may not be all that accurate.

The generator should be generating more than 7.2 volts before it gets to the regulator. It is the job of the regulator to clamp the voltage between a preset value. I would suspect that your brushes are worn and the commutating rings need to be cleaned. It could be as simple as the springs that push the brushes agains the slip rings are gummed up with dirt and grease. You can check this with either an ohmmeter.
