Okay all you Ford specialists, help me out here! I have a '67 4400 that developed a knock. I tore it down and found a spun bearing on the #1 rod. But I also found that my 4400 had a '70 model 3000 series engine in it - 4.2" x 4.2" instead of 4.4" x 4.4". My first question is are the blocks of the 3000 & 4000 the same? Can I bore the 4.2" bore to 4.4"? I am going to replace the pistons while I've got it down anyway. At least I could regain some of the cubic inches that way.
My second question is one I have asked before but got no response. The tranny in this tractor is a 4x4, and I have yet to figure out why anyone would want to have 4 reverse gears! Is it possible to replace the guts of this tranny with something more usable, like a 6x4 or preferably an 8 speed? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Jack

The 4.2 and 4.4 blocks are not the same. While you MIGHT be able to bore a 4.2 block out to 4.4, it would leave your cylinder walls paper thin, and would not be a good idea.

The 4x4 trans was generally used with a torque convertor. Nice in industrial applications where a person did a lot of shuttle shifting.
