I just changed the external pump gasket on my Ford 231 LCG (Same set up as the 2600) Seemed like a very easy fix but I can not get the 3 point to lift. I checked the fluid level on the side by removing the plug. It was creamy white and full. Does anyone have any suggestions prior to me calling in the local tractor repair person?

Thanks for you help

creamy white? Sounds like water in your oil. What temp. is it outside, it could be frozen.

Hi Mr. G, Assuming you have already verified there is fluid in the hydrauluc system reservoir, you may need to prime the pump...Al English

I think the pump does need to be primed. The hydraulics worked perfectly prior to me removing the pump.

If I am not mistaken, do you prime the pump by removing the pump then fill the pump, through the intake hole, with fluid, then reinstall on the tractor?

Thanks,

I think your tractor has the same pump as the earlier ones. If it does there will be a plug in the top of the pump end cover.

Remove the plug then crank(but don't start) the engine. If clear(no bubbles) oil flows out of the hole the pump is primed. To insure no air enters the system crank(but do not start) the engine, and while oil is flowing out of the port re-install the plug.

If the pump needs priming put a fitting in the hole, and hook a hose to the fitting(or find a hose you can stuff into the hole). Put the other end of the hose in a container, run the tractor until the oil comes out with no bubbles, then turn off the engine. To insure no air enters the system crank(but do not start) the engine, and while oil is flowing out of the port re-install the plug. Top off the reservoir & you're there.

One other thing, be very careful not to allow any contamination(dirt, grit, pieces of rubber hose, etc) to enter the hydraulic system. Good luck...Al English

Al,

I just got back in. Thank you for the information, it worked like a charm. The first time I primed the pump I thought I had it but noticed that the arms when being lifted "vibrated." I assumed it was air in the system. I went through the process a second time and the hydraulics work smoothly both up and down.

Thank you very much!!! This site and the helpfull people like yourself are an asset to novices like myself.
