I have had the 4wd on this tractor worked on at the dealer. The clutch pack for the 4wd was overhauled and they can not get it to come out of 4wd. The solenoid valve was replaced. Any ideas?

Thanks far the advice and quick response. I did as you suggested, jacked up the front end with the tractor running and put it in 2wd. The drive shaft turned with the assistance of a wrench. When I put it in 4wd the drive shaft would not turn. So it is working. When they checked it at the dealer it was by backing it up a slope. I suppose they assumed the rear wheels would spin if it was not in 4wd.

Early ZF transfer boxes don't completely disengage. If you can turn the output shaft with a big pair of channel locks (front wheels in the air, engine running, switch in 2WD), that's about as freed up as you're going to get it. It was manufactured that way intentionally to eliminate gear rattle noises when disengaged.

If it is working correctly, you should find that when you are in 2WD, the wheels will not pull a load when you try to spin all 4.

Have they pressure tested the hyd circuit to the clutch pack? Are they checking for disengagement by jacking up one front wheel and trying to turn it? If the front axle has a limited slip diff (many ZF axles do), jack up both front wheels. These clutches have a fair amount of drag on them even when right. How are they determining it is not disengaging?
