3000 SOS bogs down in most gears

I have a 3000 SOS that I have used without (much) trouble for 5 or 6 years since repairing the input shaft. I have noticed that the transmission runs hot, but figured that was just the way they were. After bailing on a hot day last summer, the tranny was REALLY hot. The next time I started the tractor I couldn't get it to stay running. Looking into it further, it runs fine at higher RPM, but smoke (vaporized oil?) comes out of the control unit (I assume rising out of the transmission).

My question is , do the diagnostic rules for the early ('59-'6?) SOS apply to this transmission (1968)? and
Does anyone have similar experience or know what is going on to cause this behavior?

Thanks in advance for any help.

what control unit? this should be under trans cover for SOS. is this what your talking about? More specifics would aid greatly in diagnostics. SOS trannys do run hot normally.

DT,
The combinations of clutch and band application for different speeds is the same for B65 and A65 tractors. Difference is that before '65, band one is applied with oil pressure, servo was pressurized in R2, 3rd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 10th. After '65 band one is applied by spring pressure and relased with oil pressure, servo one is pressurized in R1, 1st, 2nd, 5th, 6th and 9th. I can only guess where the excess heat's coming from; something's either slipping or dragging. Careful pressure test with transmission warmed up should tell. My guess would be that the direct drive clutch has warped plates that are dragging when it should be released such as in speeds 3rd, 4th, 7th or 8th - were you working in these speeds? There's lots of Selectospeed experts on this site, lets hope you get some other ideas... good luck..

I was going between 3rd and 4th most of the time.

Thanks for the information. I was probably baling in 4th most of the time and 5th when the row is thin.
