3600 gas normally hard starting in cold weather?

I have a 1977 new (to me) ford gas tractor (not SOS). This is the first Ford gas tractor I've ever owned so I don't know anything about how good/bad they are. Everything else I have (including another couple blue ones) are diesel. I find that once the temps get below about 30 degrees F. I can start any of my diesel tractors easier than I can start this gas tractor. Since I got this one gas tractor so I'd have something that should start easily in colder weather, this isn't helping my 'stress' levels much that it won't start in the cold. In past years I never could get a Ford truck or car to start when it was below freezing but assumed that was because they were worn out when I got them (therefore affordable to me). Is the Ford 3 cyl. 3600 gas engine known as a hard starter in the cold? From research here - it has the junk holly carb on it (and it is junk - needle valve leaks like sieve, doesn't look like this carb has the typical brass seat I remember from my carb days, and it always stumbles when I increase rpm - from what I read here - replace with Zenith rather than rebuild). Also looks like the battery and battery case have to come out to get to the plugs and do a compression check so assume the plugs are junk, and I'm sure I could clean up the battery connections along the way too. If it's normally a good starting engine that just needs some tlc then I can put some time and money in it but it's been so dry here lately the money trees aren't producing much so don't want to invest in anything but a for sale sign if it's not a reliable unit in the cold.

Thanks in advance for input,

Bob
