Hey guys, I been looking at changing the power steering and alternator belt on this great old tractor for a little while now but keep putting it off. I figure I'll have to disconect the shaft that comes out of the engine passes under the radiator and goes into the hyd. pump of the front loader. Never delt with this before but I am guessing that the best way to disconnect the shaft (to get the belts on) is to disconect the 4 bolts that attach it to the belt pully. Then loosen the bolts that hold the hyd. pump to the frame of the tractor just under the radiator at the front of the tractor. This would be to move the shaft forward some if need be. I can do that by taking off the industial grill. Getting to the bolts on the fan pully is a little work but ok. This is the only way that I can see doing it. I thought I could disconnect the little U-joint but the pins are welded. Is this the way anyone else has done it? Or am I off on this one. I fugure to do this now in the tractor shed rather than in the field later, the belts are fairly old. Any suggestions would be great, I learn something every time I work on this old guy. Thanks.

I have a 63 400 Ind. with a wagner loader. I was able to take my pump off and unsrewed the shaft with a pipe wrench.

Sounds like the wagner is easier to deal with. The loader on my 64 was one of the English models that ford purchased and put on it. Very beefy, really does the job. When I get it done I'm gonna post the process on the board for others to use.

Not sure about a 4000 but on my old fordson the shaft is splined into the 4 bolt hub. I took the pump loose and pulled it forward. There was almost enough room to get the new belt in. I am stuborn and got it forced in. I was going to remove the hub but someone used too long of bolts and I could not get them out without cutting. The kind of things we overlook when the engine is all apart. Also the shaft and hub tend to beat each other and can be a pain to get apart.

Good luck Don

Good advice and things to watch for. Out here in Colorado we really got hammered by the recent snow storm and the "old man" really moved some drifts. Too heavey to pull an 8' blade through but I did have a "work around" for that.

yep.. but look at the little groves on the ends of the shaft.. if you have that type of ford shaft..
the grooves wear out and the little cross recievers wear out. they need replacing about every 5 years or so.. now might be a chance to ckeck the shaft and couplers while your changeing belts..

but change out all the hoses while the belts are off as well.. then check the water pump for play while your there as well.. gently blow out all the debris from the radiator .. and your good for another 10 to 20 years.. good luck Bill

Hello

I have a 1964 Ford Tractor Front Loader, 4000 T/L Grey and Blue 4 cylinder and wondering how much they are going for to sell and how can I find out the price of this tractor?

Thank you,

Good advice and support. I'll do it soon as the snow is gone. The "old man" really moved some drifts this week from our Colorado storm.
