I have a 640 with a 134 c.i. engine that leaks oil from the valve cover gasket. This is especially true when I am going downhill. Oil goes all over the carburator side of the engine, covers the manifold, gets hot and smokes. I thought it leaked because the valve cover was warped or bent. The valve cover was secured as tight as I could get it. I just removed the valve cover and it is straight. Has anyone else had this problem, and what did they do about it? I am thinking about putting on two valve cover gaskets. I would use Permatex or something to keep gaskets together. Any other thoughts or suggestions? Thanks Gordy MN

Gordy, Part (or all) of your problem may be that you tightened the valve cover down "as tight as you could". I don't have the torque numbers handy but the 2 nuts on top should only be snugged up. Any more torque twists the tin valve cover and makes it leak. If the cover is OK one gasket should do it and a little gasket cement wouldn't hurt anything. As always this advice has a money back guarantee. Enjoy, Dan J

Gordy, If you are positive that the valve cover and gasket are set properly then the only things I can think of would be the drain port on top of the head is not letting the oil drain back down to the pan and your holding alot of oil on top of the head or your beather on the side of the valve cover may be pluged. Hope this helps. Dave.

Thanks for your comments. The oil passages are all clean, and oil runs down O.K. The breather is on the other side, and no oil comes out of it. When the cover is installed, I can look at the gasket at eye level and see daylight on the other side. I tightened the two nuts on top as tight as I dared. I think I will double up on the gaskets, use a sealer and see if that does the trick. It just looks bad to have the left side of the engine covered in oil, and smoking at times. Thanks. Gordy MN
