Generator charging problem

I have a 971 with a 12 volt generator which was recently rebuilt. When I installed the generator, I also replaced the voltage regulator. The problem I am having now is that when I start the tractor, it will charge at 10 amps and slowly fall to about 2 amps. After about an hour of running, it will climb to 10 amps and start cooking my battery. If I let it sit for an hour or so and start it up, it will be fine for a while. I don't want to put an alternator on because I want to keep it origional. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a regulator problem to me. specifically the cutout relay inside the regulator. You will need a multimeter to troubleshoot this problem.

The voltage from the generator to the regulator should be over 12 volts... anywhere from 13 to 18 volts dc. It is the job of the regulator to "clamp" the voltage to a usable voltage. Modern charging system regulate to 14.4 vdc. Make sure that you do not have more that 14.4 volts coming out of the regulator. Excessive voltage will "cook" the battery.

Check the voltages and get back to me. This does not sound like a difficult problem to solve.
