Where exactly do you split the tractor to redo the clutch? Is it right behind the oil pan, or right behind where the shift levers are. I unhooked the linkage on the clutch and was pushing the clutch lever to the rear when it felt like it released but would not come back to it original position where it was when I unhooked the linkage. I haven't start it since because I didn't want to jam things on the inside. Does this mean I'm obigated to splitting this now? And how much of a job is it???

A couple of thoughts, most of the industrial models have a greasable throwout nearning, be sure and get one instead of sealed.

Check around on idependent shops. There are two here, one charges about $200 for a clutch job, the other about 350. Another local shop builds the clutch, $300 for a complete job including the "good" linings no longer available in the US. Our local vo ag dept will do one for $100 but takes a while to get in. They do a good job. Most of the dealers within a 250 miles of me are either not worth the powder it would take to blow their nose or booked 3-4 months.

Hi Al,

Sounds like you bought the 3400. I still think you got a bargain.

Splitting the tractor is a major job but if you have the set-up, tools, some mechanical aptitude and the patience (along with a FO shop manual) you can do it. The tractor has to be split right behind the engine just under the steering box. This is where the clutch housing is located. You need a means of supporting both halves of the tractor. A good engine hoist and some heavy-duty jack stands would be helpful.

Based on what you said you paid for the tractor, you might be better off to let a professional service department at a tractor dealership fix it for you. You might be looking at some where around $1500 (+ or -) to hire it done. (Maybe more if they have to remove the loader) But if you like a challenge, you can try it your self.

Above all else, consider safety and common sense for which there is no substitute. HTH. Rick H. Ga.

I forgot to mention that the guy also gave me a finishing mower with it. Its a Deutz-Allis RGM 72.
Do you know anything about them?

The safety factor was the first thing. I have a new shop, but I don't have the equipment for a repair which is so heavy. I will most likely send it somewhere to get fixed. One slip, and I could get squished. Gotta do some calling today to get an idea what they charge here in my area for the repair. If anyone has a photo of their
