have read a lot about the 134/172 engines cira 54-64. are these engines interchangeable in the 601 series tractors. (will they bolt up without extensive changes?)...

going to rebuilt my 59 601 offset. but would put 172 in if not too much trouble changing over

I swapped my 600's 234 for a 172 engine.. Total changes included:
1: New intake/exhaust manifold (Old one was cracked, and I wanted to be able to use the bigger 172 carb.)
2: The engine I used had a opening for a fuel pump. I locktited two allen head setscrews in the bolt holes, and used a 30 mm freeze plug that I had slightly expanded with a socket and my press to plug the big opening.
3: Temperature sender opening in rear of head needed different adapter as it was smaller than the hole in the old head.
4:Several bolt holes needed rethreading as they hadn't been used in whatever application the engine came from. 4: I have to get used to an engine that runs on all four cylinders and doesn't foul the plugs evey 30 minutes...;-)
It went quite easily and simply. Changing out the axle bushing and the front support and rebushing the kingpins were much harder. Truck

Are you certian you have a 601 offset tractor? If so, it is the only one. All the Ford offset tractors were 501, with the 134 engines. Yes you could use the 172 engine, but your differential would be at risk! Even the 134 engine was known to rip out the differential occasionally. I sold Ford for a dealer from 1958 to 1962.
