Is there a 12v starter that can/will bolt up to an 800 ford that is a 6v now? If so, does anyone have model or part number? I plan to convert all to 12v.I am tired of screwing with the 6v not starting! I did not know how long the 6v starter would last, running on 12v. Also does anyone know who handels the best 12v conversion kit for that tractor? Thanks.

I converted my 861 Ford to a 12V. 8-10 years ago and have had no problems with the starter that was on it for 6v. You should try it. What have you got to lose? My 861 now starts in 2-5 seconds.

6v systems have been a problem or conversions would not be so popular. I worked at a shop that did lots of them. Don't worry about your 6v starter, it will work fine, and for my money, I would get a kit with all you need from Genesee. They have the best harness I have seen. Lot of guys want to save a few bucks by buying and making components by themselves, but the headaches aren't worth it, especially if this is your first time. The kit will come with all the brackets, the correct pulley for the alt., a diode wired into the harness and all the related connectors you will need, most prewired into the harness (like the connector that plugs into your alt.)

I also agree with the electronic conversion, but that is purely up to you if you want to spend the extra 100 dollars to do away with the points and condenser and all associated fiddling. One downside I can see to the electronic ignition, is that if it fails, you are screwed until you can get another unit. They do sell them locally here though.

You must be trying to mask a problem. If the engine is right the 6V will work just fine. The stock 6V starter will handle the 12 volts.

Petronix has a decent and easily installed kit. 150.95 for the alternator, wiring harness, hardware, voltmeter and easy to read and color coded instructions. Get the mounnting bracket for the alternator. It may add 5.00 or so to the price.

Also, consider their elctronic ignition and never mess with points again.

Cal Andy at Genessee Products.

Your starter should handle 12V just fine. Don't worry about the starter. It just spins faster that's all. Done three conversion using same old starter w/o any problems after that.

On your tractor it is easy, get a 801 series diesel generator, pulley and cooling fan, in line resistor, regulator and starter, it will still look stock and you can still get parts for it from your dealer as before, just remember it was changed to 801 diesel parts for down the road.

Might also try the listings for a later 2000/4000 4 cyl.. The last ones before they came out with the 3 cylinders were equipped with 12V systems when shipped to NYS for service mowing the banks of the thruway. (Or at least they did the one I have...lol!)
