WHEN PULLING AN IMPLEMENT AND THE GOVERNOR NEEDS TO OPEN, THE TRACTOR SPITS & SPUTTERS, BUT IF YOU PULL THE CHOKE OUT 1/2 WAY IT SMOOTHS OUT. WITH THE CHOKE 1/2 OPEN THE GOVERNOR OPEN CORRECTLY. PLEASE ADVISE

1954 NAA with same symptoms... I vote on fuel.... eventually she will not start back up without sitting a while and then it will die as the obstructions start blocking fuel flow more and more

I HAD A FUEL DELIVERY PROBLEM AT ONE TIME, UNSCREW THE SEDIMENT BOWL FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE TANK AND REPLACE IT. THIS FIXED MY TRACTOR ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO.

Hi Jeff, Just got my 801 running again. Turns out there is a strainer in the gas tank. Need to pull the petcock valve to clean it. Lo and behold mine was missing and a bee(yes a bee) was stuck in my petcock valve. $50 for a new petcock/strainer and I'm back on the road. My tractor exhibited the same problems only worse. It would run good at idle but when I loaded it it would spit sputter then die. But if I stopped and choked it it would sometimes come back for a while. Had a dandy time putting the new one back in without removing the gas tank. I had to remove the exhaust manifold, roll the valve cover over insert the new petcock then unbolt and jack the gas tank up as far as it would go to reinstall the valve cover. Hope yours is easier. Email if you have any problems. Hope this helps.

Yes, his is easier. The NAA has a sediment bowl and it is in the corner, unlike your situation. He just has to drain the tank and he can get to his without any problem and without moving the tank. Good thing to check, however.

As Raystach says make sure fuel and air is getting to the carb properly. However, classic problem with needing choke half way out to run good usually means you are getting too much air, or in other words you have an air leak. Check manifold - carb area for leaks. You can spray WD-40 lightly in suspected area and see if tractor runs better for an instant and if so you probably have an air leak. Also sometimes ignition issues will mask this type of problem and make it look like a carb problem when it really is in the distributor or plugs, etc. But I would bet on an air leak, perhaps where the carb joins the manifold or on the carb itself.

Sounds like you need to open the main adjustment slightly. Try opening it 1/4 turn and try it. If you need more try another 1/4 turn. Before you do this make sure fuel and air delivery is good and clean.
