It turns out this is a multiple choice answer.

My original factory Ford manual says:

172" gas - 62.6 hp@2200rpm
144" diesel - 42.7 hp@2200 rpm
172" diesel - 56.3@2200 rpm
These outputs were obtained without air filters, mufflers, or fans.

The Tractor Resource Site quotes PTO outputs measured by the Nebraska Tractor Tests:

Gas - 44.7 to 48.4@2000 rpm(varies w/model)
LP - 39.5 to 46.6@2000 rpm(varies w/model)
Diesel - 39.9 to 41.4@2000 rpm(varies w/model)

The consensus is that the factory numbers are high. I've never dyno'ed any of these engines, but even factoring for the differences in the tests, I'm inclined to go with the Nebraska figures...Al English

I think the early ones (55&56) were listed as 40.

Depends on gas, LP, or diesel. Gas is around 44 hp.
