OK guys can someone tell me if there is hope for this thing. I bought the manual and changed the filter in the SOS. Adjusted the bands. Tractor went from haveing only gears R1 3 4 7 8 to having all gears. Works fine as long as tractor is pulling. If you start down a hill she free wheels like it is in neutral. Is my adjustment off or is the transmission due a rebuild. My next step is to check the pressures but I had hoped that the band adjusment would do the trick.

LarryNCKS or somebody else might have to correct me on this one - If you have an early model SOS there were several gears that should freewheel. These are denoted by a red crosshatch background under the gear number on the selector. It has to do with the over-running clutch operation. In later models they changed this as it was determined to be an undesirable condition in normal usage.

I will look in my 2000 manual to see if that is mentioned but I believe it is a Hundred series SOS symptom.

Congratulations on getting all of your gears back working - I do not believe you have any unsurmountable problems if all of them work now.

The original '59 thru '62 SOS in the Hundred-and-one series tractors doesn't have engine braking in R1,1,2,5,6,9. It does have engine braking in R2,3,4,7,8,10. Check the manual on function of the A planetary and the overrunning clutch.

The OR clutch consists of an inner drum with ramps that is part of the A sun gear, a roller bearing and an outer drum that is part of the A pinion carrier. For R1,1,2,5,6,9, the rollers climb the ramps and wedge against the smooth inner surface of the outer drum. If tractor speed exceeds engine speed, like when going downhill, the rollers become 'unwedged' and the tractor freewheels.

I don't understand your description of only R1,3,4,7,8 working but it's not important if all 10 and 2 work.

The red cross hatched gear selections are indeed the "freewheel" selections. You don't want any of those when working on hilly terrain..
