Does my govenor need to be rebuilt?

My 4000 SU runs well but it is difficult to get engine to run in the range of 800 - 1200 rpm. When opening the throttle the rpm tends to jump from an idle to about 1200 rpm. Going the oposite direction, closing the throttle when running 1200+ rpm does little until it goes down to a slow idle. Operating the carb throttle directly seems to increase rpm gradually as it should. Does this sound like the govenor needs work? I'm a little intimidated at the thought of tearing it apart; is it a difficult repair? I have a ford manual but it doesn't cover this very well. I would appreciate advice. Thanks.

If the govenor arm is moving the way it's suppose too,it's an adjustment. If not, time to pull the govenor.

Disconnect the linkage from the govenor to the carb.Start the engine, increase the rpm's At the carb and see if the govenor arm is moving.Be carefull with the linkage removed, the carb. can go to full throttle.

Bill...before ya go tearin' into the governor...y don'tcha check the linkages from the governor to carb..and those from the hand throttle to the governor. If ya have a repair manual, it should contain some things to check to determine if the governor is functioning properly, before you tear it all apart....

I wish I could give ya more specific info, but I must say I don't know much about the Thousand Series, but you should at least make sure the linkages, and springs, and all other "little" components are ok and functioning properly.
