I drive orange myself, so know NOTHING about Fords ...

But, I have a friend in the market for a utility tractor... A local Used car dealer has a 601 workmaster for sale with a 3 point mower (brush hog style) He wants $4000 for it... it seems a bit steep to me (though the salesman says it's been "all gone through" ...That could be sales talk for "all used up" but it does look clean)... You can pick up a 8 or 9 n for ~2-3K around here...

Can anybody here tell me... is there anything to look for problem-wise for this series of tractors... I know all Fords are good... but $4K worth?

Thanks,
Charlie

Charlie...601 is just the 600 Series that was produced from 1958-1962...The model number is what you need to pay attention to...Certain models will have Live-PTO...some won't...some will have a 5spd tanny...some will have 4spd..and some will even have the fragile, Selecto-Speed Tranny (not a good thing)...

Also..be wary of a shiny new paint job...it can hide a multitude of sins...Drive it around...check for smoke..check the hydraulics..pto..cracks in block or housings...etc..

I think 4K is a bit steep..but it could just be the price for the area your in...In my area you can get a good 640 for around 2-3K...

Heres a link that shows what comes on each model number...ex:641..661..671..681..

The 601 series is a step up from the NAA series and in good shape without any implements is worth $3500-4500.Be careful about leaking axle seals,a bad clutch, and of course engine wear.Live PTO and other extras can add to the value.
