I recently bought a Ford 641. Until today it was running great. I used it last week to do some shredding without any problem. This a.m. I got ready to do some shredding at it started and ran as always. However, when I engaged the PTO, upped the rpm's and began to mow, it died after about 15 seconds. It repeated this several times. Each time it restarted and I eventually returned to the barn and unhooked the shredder. It would still start and run at low rpm but when I got the rpm's up it would die. Now it will start idle for about 5 minutes and die or die shortly after boosting rpm's. I have to wait 30 min to one hour before it'll start again. Any help would be appreciated. I've checked all fuel lines, hoses, breather, etc.

Brad..did ya check to see if ya had a good, steady stream of fuel flowin outa the gas line? If ya gots good flow outa the fuel line.. then ya may wanna "rap" ya carb a few good licks with a screwdriver...Sounds like a fuel starvation problem...

One more thing...a bad coil will run good for 45 mins and then die on ya...but after the insides of the coil cool down...it'll run again...

Just givin' ya coupla options...I'd check the fuel system first though..

I didn't take the fuel line loose from the carb but did loosen the fuel/water separator and it seemed to flow well enough to indicate there was good flow. I'll try wrapping on the carb. Is it possible air is entering the system?

Brad...my 640 did those exact things while under a load....If ya think ya gots good fuel flow..then just rap on the carb a little bit...see if it helps...(helped mine)...Has the main-jet on the carb been adjusted since your successful bushhoggin? BTW..these tractors can run w/ fuel just barely 'drizzelin' down...its when they are under load..(RPM's go up & more fuel is needed) that the poor fuel supply becomes apparent...

Yeah you could look for any holes in the manifold...or spray some WD-40 around any "suspicious" areas....to see if the engine RPM's change...

I've got the same problem with my 641. Do you think a larger diam. fuel line could be the answer?

If my memory serves me correcty...the 134 CU Engine needs a 1/4 fuel line.(what I have on mine)...now the 172 CU might need a 5/16?? I cant really say...

I'd bet its something else causing your tractor to do this...Most likely it's insufficient fuel flow...caused by: clogged screens/filter...or dirty carb...Just rap on the carb w/ a screwdriver and see if that makes a difference....

Here's a few more things ya might wanna check out:

1) bad coil--it'll run good for 45 mins..then die..but after the insides cool off..it'll run again

2) bad ignition switch---die after 15 min's

3) bad condensor---die after 15-20 secs...
