I meticulously and to the letter followed Tommy Duvall's excellent article on converting 2000 and 4000 on this site on my "new" 801 except for using ammeter instead of voltmeter. I used the 1A-50V diode between the altenator and the accessory terminal post. I can get 12 volts to everywhere in the system except past the solenoid. The tractor had a four post solenoid and not knowing its condition, I changed it to a three post NAPA ST-82. I can get 12 volts to everywhere I need it but I cannot get 12V to the solenoid center post and consequently to the starter switch. I can crank and run the tractor by using battery cable to crank from battery to starter post and it runs good but I cannot crank it in the normal manner. I even tried the old 4 post solenoid and could get the starter to turn with the "I" post connected to the switched side of the ignition switch. When I pull the switch the starter turns. That aint good. What is wrong here? I wanted to e-mail Duvall but couldn't find an address. Thanks.

Email address is tduvall@alltel.net => iffin I can ever help ya again.....But I wasn't the brains behind that article.....Had a lot of help from this board!

Anyway, I made the same mistake with my solenoid...The guy at XXXXX Auto parts said "Oh yeah....It'll work..." Well, it didn't. It has to have the post that is + when the switch is on, and gets grounded by the starter button...

Glad to hear you are back in the saddle.....Now, as a suggestion, contact a fellow named Andy at Genessee Products at (918) 274-8000 and get the electronic ignition....you won't regret it!

Good Luck!
Tommy D.

Tommy D: thanks for your response and help. I got it working. As for the genessee electronic ignition, I have had it on my 52 8n for five years and wouldn't be without it. It is worth its weight in gold. Put it on and forget it. I will do that to the 841 as soon as I get all the bugs out. I have a problem now with engine spitting fire back through carb under load or on sudden acceleration. Ignition timing is set exactly according to Hoyle. Don't know what this might be unless its valves. On idle, I can remove the #1 plug wire and it makes no difference in rpms. The same with #4 wire. If I remove either #2 or #3 plugwire, motor will almost die. Compression on #1 is 110# and 135# on all others. What have I got here? This question is also for the other experts. Thanks. Bill W.

Sounds like #1 has a burnt intake valve - this would cause spitting under load and lower compression. Compression isn't too bad but it should be within 10% of other cylinders. Also sounds like 1 & 4 have something wrong because they should cause stumble if the plug wire is pulled. The only way to tell is to pop the head off and have a look. Good luck.

On the 3-post solenoid you must supply 12v to the correct "big post" from the battery. There should be the positive battery cable going to one side of the solenoid, the starter going to the other big terminal and the small terminal goes to the starter switch. Try this if you have a test light or voltmeter: See if you have 12v on the small terminal. If not, swap the battery and starter connections on the solenoid and see if you have 12v on the small terminal now. If yes, then make sure the tractor is in neutral and ground the small terminal. Does the starter now turn? If this all fails, you may have a solenoid that requires 12v being applied to the small terminal to start and that will not work for you.

Thanks scotty: I apparently did have the wrong solenoid (man at NAPA said it would work!!!) I now have a different one and it fired right up like it 'sposed to. thanks.
