I have a 71 Ford 3400 diesel tractor with a battery that is going by-by. Does this tractor really need the 4 DLT battery or is there a replacment that will do just as well and not cost as much? Who makes a good tractor battery? Any help will be appreciated.

Most of the brands of batteries that people have mentioned here are made by Exide, which only last 2 1/2 to 3 years. I sell batteries and I use them, and the best 4DLT on the market is the Interstate. I sell Exides also, but when when Interstate says "Guaranteed Fresh Power", they are not telling stories. Another high point of Interstate is that they will test about 2000 batteries of one BCI group, and then rate the cranking amps of that group with the LOWEST rate of the 2000 batteries; which means Interstates CCA is UNDER rated. Oh, by the way, stick with the 4DLT in the 3400, Ford put it in there for a reason. Like we said in the Army, better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it.

they are about 86 bucks at sams... and yes,, they are usually worth the price... in as much as they will work about twice as long as an car battery... they also will sit for long periods and still start the tractor when a car battery would have run down..

I think the battery on the 3400 sits under the hood in that swing out tray on top of the engine??? If so you need that low profile battery so the hood will close and not arc between the terminals, there is probably a car battery short enough accomplish this feat but I dont think you will be happy with the cranking.

I don't know where the battery is on your Ford but on my Fords it is the only battery that will fit unless a whole new battery box was fabricated and mounted in a more accessible location.

My 4DLT batteries are under the floor in the cab. The battery can be changed in the 9600 with Allen cab from the exterior. Have to put the battery down through the floor from inside on the 8600 with the Hiniker cab. The 9600 battery is a bit easier to service and change but both are a real pain and I cuss the guy who thought this up!

Like Paul says you need a lot of cranking amps for winter. A regular car battery would probably work in warm weather but would it fit?

As far as battery brands I tend to think Interstate lasts better than most. I've had 4DLT batteries in CaseIH, NH, NAPA, Exide, and Durastart flavors. None of them lasted over 3 years. I have Interstate 4DLTs in my X600 tractors right now and a pair of Interstate 2XHD 6 volts hooked as 12V in one of my Majors. Put all of them in last fall about the same time.

Got a pair of Durastart 6 volts in the other Major and they have done well but I think they are on their last legs now. I'll probably replace them with Interstates when the time comes, mainly because no one seems to stock them anymore and they usually have to be ordered. Everybody and his dog is an Interstate dealer and the truck comes through every week.

Bought a 4DLT about a year ago for my 3600 for about $110 from O'Reilly. Looks and acts good so far.

I think the Interstate 4DLTs I bought were about $126 each.

Abouy $100. Farm store has them, My TW has a Case-IH brand in it, looks old, going strong. IThe 7700 also uses one. I'm not sure about the size of your engine, but with a glow plug & if you know what 'winter' means you'll probably need the reserve?
