Lifting large round bales

Will a 960's 3pt lift a 1500 - 2000lb large round bale? Anyone tried it?

I've got a '57 960 with a loader and am also wondering if the loader is stout enough to be able to lift a large round bale off of a trailer. I would only be picking it up off the trailer and backing up to get enough room to set it down on the ground. Then I would turn around and pick it up with the 3pt. I would have to do some modifications to the loader so I'd like to find out if it's possible before I go and start modifying the loader.

forgot something important..

in addition to flipping over .....

many folks have been hurt or injured by lifting the bale too HIGH!!! and it falls or rolls back on top of the driver...

so always lower the bale imeadiatly after backing off away from the trailer.. and never let the bale/backet get high enough to roll backwards!!!

so moving bales must always be done carefully.. please becareful... must be a million ways for a farmer to get hurt...

Back 40, You are really asking a lot for that tractor!! You need a "bigger" tractor when you start talking that kind of weight. I wouldn't try anthing over 1000 lbs, to be safe, and not end up with a big repair bill.

you didnt say what kind of loader..
if its a heavy loader,, and you have water in the rear tires.. and the ground is very flat.. and .. if you put a bale on the rear to counter weight the front.. (as soon as possible.. and when you travel, you keep the bale very low.. then yes... it works very well.. a heavy ford loader.. and if you buy the right bale spear... some loaders work well with the bucket add on spear even though it is farther out.. a better solution is the remove the bucket and buy the spear/frame that is adjustable to match your bucket width.. this is safer.. but we use a ford 3000 which is actually smaller than a 960.. and with proper care and keeping weight on the rear.. and keeping the bale low,, it works quite well.. and are very careful to stay on flat ground... but we have 350 lbs of weight on each tire, and water in the rear tires as well... be carefull.. good luck.. bill

Also have a 961 with a 701 Ford loader.

Agree with almost all of what Bill says.

Make sure your loader cylinders are large enough to lift the weight. The original 701 hydraulic cyliners are not large enough to lift much of a bale.

Can carry just fine on rear 3 pt.

Be sure to not over heat your original pump if really struggling to lift for a long period of time.

Some round bales are ~700lbs, while others are ~1800lbs. Wond what he's starting with for bales, in addition to the loader?

Anyone ever used those 3pt mounted hi-lift bale spears that supposedly can lift 6' high or more? I've never seen one used but occasionally see them advertised.
