It's confusing to me that it has 900 on the front - either it is a 900 series (which were not the gold models) or it is a 901 series, which could be the gold series. I don't know what to say, other than that does not make sense to me.

Be careful on restoring it, sometimes repainting it will destroy the 'gold value' of it, as anyone can paint a 981 & pretend it was a gold model. Original paint can be more valuable - to some people - that a new paint job.

If it has a 900 emblem on it, it is because the big x01 series had a plastic two piece, glued together emblem which fell off or broke very early in most tractors life.

And the model - it would be a 901 series.

It would have to be an SoS. Those were the only one's painted gold.

No one knows just how many were made. I forget if they did not keep records, or if they burned in a plant fire? But, there is no accurate record of how many or which serial numbers were authentic gold models.

As such, some folks have been known to get out a can of spray paint.....

That's why I was so seceptical in my other post; if someone is telling you he has a 1950 900 gold Ford that is original and he knows only 50 were made, he is totally & completely lying. There is not _any_ part of that statement that is true.

I would not deal with such a person.

I think a lot of people are very uninformed about Gold Fords & White IH's - and there are a lot of people out there trying to take advanage of that.

If you are looking to buy a collector tractor, be sure you understand what is a collextor tractor, & what you are actually buying. Don't get took.

Not quite. I'm not sure anyone knows the exact number, but here's the way I understand the gold tractor situation:

In 1959 Ford introduced the Selec-O-Speed transmission....basically an automatic, shift-on-the-fly transmission for a tractor. To introduce it they built a small number of tractors with the S-O-S transmission and painted them gold. My understanding is that each Ford tractor dealer was required to order 1 gold tractor, but he could order it in any model he chose. I've heard that there were about 2600 Ford tractor dealers in business at the time so there were approximately 2600 gold tractors built. However, I don't think anyone know how many were 801's or 601's or 901's, etc. So, to answer your question, there were NO 900's of any color built in 1950. The 900 was made from '55 to '57. The 901 (and 601, 701, 801, 501) was built from '58 to '62. The gold ones were all built in '59, the year the SOS was introduced.

If I'm wrong and someone has the correct info, please correct me.

Jim UT is right and to prove it I have one sitting in my garage in pieces. After I took off the blue paint I found gold on the whole tractor except the front end, which could have been replaced over the years. I have the 1959 Ford 871 SOS. All the research I have did says it all happen in 1959 as Jim said.

Jim UT is absolutely correct. There could be no gold 900's because of the years that they were produced. There actually was a Gold Ford 601 sold in my home town. Rumor is that it is still in the area but it was repainted. I also have been told that there were a lot of problems with those initial S-O-S trasmissions, and that if I was actually going to restore the tractor for use it would be very costly.
