I was ordering a new gasket set for my early low SN 1957 861 engine, and noticed that there were two different part numbers for the 1957 and the 1958 and later years. I was wondering what is the difference? Thanks !

I think the only difference is the rear main seal. The older ones used a rope type seal, the newer a lip type. I`m not sure about this, but I think the lip seal will work in the older engines. I will be overhauling an older engine shortly, and I intend to find out.

The last rear main seal I changed on a 4cyl had a rope seal but got a 2 piece lip style. About 6 months ago and haven't heard anything from the customer. No news is good news. If I remember, it was a 641, but that doesn't really matter.
