Hi, I have a Ford 4000 that I use to cut hay with a 6 1/2' disc mower. After a couple of hours cutting, it loses pto power and will not give the mower enough power to cut. If I then let the tractor set overnight the next morning it works great again for a couple-three hours before repeating the cycle. Could it be because it is getting too hot? The guage doesn't say that it is but this is the only thing I can come up with. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Audrey Zoog

If it is a 3 cyl 4000 with independent PTO sounds as if the clutchpack piston seals are giving up. When the oil gets hot & thins, the clutch won't lock up fully. By now you need clutch discs and plates, too. A rear split is required. If it is a 4 cylinder 4000, the PTO disc may be getting oil on it and slipping when hot. But I bet you have a 3 cylinder tractor.

Thank you for your reply--it is a 3 cyl diesel. What you describe sounds very plausable. How big of a job is it to split the rear-end? We do have all the service manuals that tell you how to do all the repairs and my husband and dad are pretty good at mechanics, but would it be something that the dealership really should do? Thank you again!

The early 4 cyl. 4000 does not have a disk pack for the pto. It's directly coupled to the tranny.

Right, but either clutch disc can get oiled, causing it to slip.

I was thinking your pto itself was losing power, like a slipping clutch.

But then you say the engine might be overheating?

So, is the whole tractor losing power, or just the pto shaft?

If it's gas engine, it could be overheating the fuel & vapor locking.

Thank you for your reply! It seems like just the pto is losing power--the hydraulic arms seem to work fine and the tractor runs fine as well. It is a 3 cyl Diesel ~1965 model. Thank you again for your reply!
