Stuck starter

The starter on my ford 800 gets stuck every once in a while. After I crank it and run it a while I'll shut it down for whatever reason and when I come back, CLICK, CLICK! I'll have to loosen the bolts that attach the starter to the tractor to free it. It has been converted to 12 volts for many years, it spins freely ordinarily, the teeth on the flywheel look ok, and the gear looks fine, and the battery is fully charged. Any suggestions on what might cause this.

This may be a stretch but if the bendix and ring gear look good your problem may be with the starter itself or your cable connections. I would remove remove the cable on the solenoid and clean real good. The starter may not be stuck on the ring gear at all but due to a poor connection simply can not get enough juice to the starter to turn the tractor over and when you loosen the starter to "unstick' it you are inadvertently twisting the connection to the solenoid making a good enough connection to allow the starter to work. Good luck.

Sometimes there is one spot that gets hit with the starter most of the time, those 2-3 teeth wear. Did you look at all the teeth? But if you are removing the starter, I'd guess you would have looked at that spot several times.
