1962 Ford 4000 Power Steering Pump Cover Leaking

I have a 1962 Ford 4000 with power steering and the pump cover leaks alot of fluid (NH134A) thru what appears to be the vent in the center of the pump cover. I have refilled the fluid a few times to approx 1/2 inch below the top of the canister. When the tractor is used for short periods of time the cover does not leak. When the tractor is run at higher rpm's for a while, like say mowing, the cover starts leaking fluid. It will leak enough down until the pump growls. I originally assumed the fluid was coming from the front seal, but this does not appear to be the case. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My 64 4000 did the same thing. Do you have the filter in the pump? It seems to me that without the filter the returned fluid comes in too fast and splashes up into the vent in the lid. I installed the missing filter in my power steering pump and haven't had the problem since.

On mine somebody sealed up the vent hole.Seems to work o.k. that way. Also check on discharge side of pump "o" ring tends to leak. There are also two "o" rings under the reservoir.

Thanks for the info. Can I ask how they sealed the vent. Did they weld it or braze it, or use some type of silicone sealer. Also, what do you think about the idea of extending the vent with a fitting and a breather tube. Sort of like a vent on a truck axle. Thanks again.

the filter has a paper cover that covers the pleats,, this cover should cover the pleats and have round holes in it....

this cover can and will come off.. the the cover comes off, eposing the pleats,, the return fluid will squirt to the top.. where the filter has the least back pressure and yes.. it ozes out everywhere.., the vent and cap both get sprayed....

so a new 6 dollar filter kit often will fix the problem... have seen it two times now..

good luck.. bill

Everyone. Thanks for the info. My tractor does not have a filter in it and sounds as though that is my problem. I guess I need to get a filter kit and take care of my problem. I guess if I am going to keep this tractor I need to find a good service manual also. Thanks again for the info.

There is also a holddown washer, spring and hook combo that is needed to hold filter in place.

Steve. Thanks for the info. I stopped at New Holland today and picked up a filter. When I saw the filter I asked the parts guy what held it in, since it looked a little different then I expected. He printed out a parts breakdown that shows the parts you are talking about. I have to go over to where the tractor is tonight and see how many of the parts I am missing. Thanks again for all the great info.
