I just bought a 3000 Ford tractor. It has 16.9 X 24 construction tires on it. I want to switch to an agricultural bar type tire. I have a line on a set of 28 inch rims and centers for it. I was wondering if by switching would be helpful or just more work than it is worth. What type tires do you have or would you recommend.

Eric R - if you can get the 28" rims and centers for a good price, you should do it. I just went through all sorts of trouble trying to locate new or even used 12 - 24" rims for my 14.9 x 24 tires and could not find them anywhere. I had ordered a set of new (ag) 14.9 x 24 tubes, tires and rims off of the internet, and the bolt circle on the rims did NOT match up with my existing (original) centers. After many calls to several Ford dealers, I learned that the original rims on my tractor ('57 841) were dimpled and aren't made anymore. I ended up having adapter rings made to match the hole pattern in my new rims and the hole pattern in my existing centers. Good luck.

Rich, I just put four new 12-24 inch rims on, mounted up ag tires. They bolted right up, I don't really understand what "dimpled" rims, are might even have them, I don't know.

The tire dealer I deal with, specializes in ag/construction tires and rims. If he cannot get the rims, he has facilities to manufacture rims and offset spacers. But he assured me the 24 inch rims are availble in all configurations.

Sorry about your internet experience, wish I could have given you an earlier heads up. If you get a chance please explain what "dimpled" is, I'll check and see if he has them availble for other members who may have them. ATW/WA

ATW/WA - To answer your question, dimpled rims do not have permanently mounted attaching points on the rim itself. There are six separate lugs that are bolted onto the center and end up straddling some matching ridges on the ID of the rims. The entire assembly depends on the integrity of the lugs and bolts. During disassembly of the wheel, once three or more of the bolts have been removed from the lugs, the entire center will literally fall from the rim. I have spoken with Miller Tire (twice) and they do not stock this exact type, but can make up a custom rim from stock smooth rims.

If your rims are good, why not go with a 24" ag tire.

Eric, I'm curious as to why it has 24 inch tires on it? Could it be a LCG? Would you have to change out the front tires for a taller set, to keep a level stance on the tractor? With taller tires it should scoot across the field a little faster, a slight reduction in pulling ability. What expected use do you have? Could you provide serial/model #? I currently have 24inch dually ag tires on. But you could change over to 28inch. Some applications those construction tires are pretty nice, another thought is to keep your centers and get rims and tires to fit. Either keep the construction tires to swap back on if needed or sell them. HTH ATW/WA

alot of industrial type tractors used them, my dads ford 3400 has 24 inch industrial tires on it, they are probably close to the same height as the 28 inch ag tires on our jubilee, the tires are alot more of a ballon tire than the regular ag tires
