Position Control Lever

I have an 860 tractor and have a question about the Postion Control Lever. I don't think it is sitting correctly. According to all the books and discussion forums I've read. It is suppose to be horizontal in the position control selection and down / for the draft control selection. But on my tractor it does not go down. I have an UP _\ position I assume is position control, since when I lift it the hydraulics go up(but slowly drops). And in the horzontal position it appears to do nothing. Is this normal on some 860's or did someone screw things up, as they have on other parts?

Sorry for such a long post, didn't know how else to say it all.

I have a new-to-me 860 that had the same symptoms. I overhauled the hydraulics (not a hard job -- the posts & video on this site are great and the shop manual helps) and here's what I learned: horizontal is position control, but pulling up even further manually engages the control valve, allowing your cylinder to activate. To get it into draft mode, I have to push down REALLY hard, to overcome the spring force/rust on the selection cam. In my case, taking the lift cover off made everything clear, and revealed that I had a stuck unloader valve, a leaking piston o-ring, and a severely worn cam follower pin. After an overhaul (which took 3 evenings), everything works as it should. Send me a note if you have more questions :)

Thanks for the info. I was able to push REALLY hard on the lever and it did go into draft position. During your overhaul what did you need to replace? Since I'am not close to any tractor store I need to plan ahead. Is it just the Hydraulic to cover gasket kit I need or will there be other parts? Haven't taken off the cover so I don't know what I'am getting into. Lift won't stay where I put it. Don't want the tractor to be down to long for an overhaul.

I hope I can remember everything, but maybe someone else will correct any oversight. I needed:

O rings for the lift cover plate that covers the cylinder bolts and the pressure relief valve (7 of them?).

A gasket and two O rings for the lift cover itself. I got an extra lift cover gasket, because the cover is heavy to lift and I was worried about tearing the gasket while trying to get everything aligned.

An O ring and backing washer for the hydraulic piston (my washer was nylon rather than leather).

A gasket for the end plate that holds the control and unloading valves in.

New cam follower pin.

Hydraulic oil.

Gasket compound to help hold gasket in place.

Gasket scraper/wood chisel, Emory cloth, & PB Blaster/penetrating oil.

I got my parts at the NH dealer, because some have reported that aftermarket O rings don't seal properly. Feel free to email if I can be of any more help: mhurwitch@engineer.com

You say the hydraulics drop slowly after raising? Sounds like you have a leaky internal seal. Had the same problem on my 640 and that's what it was. Can't say I know much about the other problem but I'll bet that if you get the seal fixed it might just go away.

You say it does nothing if it's in the horizontal position. If it won't lift at all in draft control something's screwed up. You should be able to raise and lower the 3 point. It doesn't necessarily stay where you put it but you should be able to raise or lower it. If you're not planning to use it for plowing and it holds position close enough when it's up for pos. control I'd be inclined to ignore it until you have to get into the hydraulics for a problem.
Later, Lee
