4000-Won't keep running

Took the 4000 out last week. I am not using it regularly, just storing it for right now. I've run it for at least 15 minutes every other week since we got it 2 months ago. It was in a barn, stored for at least 2-3 years without heavy use before that. It has run fine since we picked it up until...
My wife had it running about a week after we picked it up and it just cut out on her. It would start while choked, but then cut out when we pushed it in. I turned the gas valve about a half turn to the close position, and it started right up. Haven't had a problem until...
This last weekend, I had it out. The tractor started right up like normal, pushed the choke in, off I went. I shut the tractor off after 5 minutes to let my brother take it for a spin, but it wouldn't start up again unless I choked and kept it held out. It would even cut out like this, but would cut out even faster if I pushed the choke in. There was about 4" of gas in the tank (think the gauge is broken), but still added 2 gal to see if that helped. I was able to start it and get it back to high ground but had to hold the choke out to keep it going. I tried closing the choke and it ran for a few seconds unassisted, but eventually cut out. It is a 70' Ford 4000, not sure on hours, I think it has clicked over 10,000 hours at least once, it is showing 7400 now. I am thinking carb work, any suggestions on other causes? If it is the carb, any suggestions on how to proceed?

I'm not familiar with the location of fuel screens and filters on that tractor but I'd check and clean those before I tore into the carb. If the carb has a drain plug on the bottom of it you may want to take it out and see if there isn't dirt/rust etc. in the bowl. Good Luck, Lee
