I currently use 80w-80w gear oil but I've got a leaky seal. Is there a heavier gear oil you can use that will stop leaking?

Sometimes 1-2 oz. of brake fluid (Dot 3)in a gearbox will stop it leaking. After awhile the rubber in seals get hard to where they will leak somewhat, the brake fluid softens the rubber up to where it seals again. But the proper way would be to install a new seal or possibly your shaft is grooved letting it leak. The brake fluid is generally a temp. fix.

My post hole digger calls for 90-140 in the gear box. You might try that or just run straight STP oil treatment in it. That stuff's pretty thick.

Have seen people put a few shots of gun grease in gearbox right with gear oil. Said grease goes to bottom, and stops seal leaks. Havent tried it and dont know if it works. Might be worth a try. Dont think it can hurt anything.

I need some info on how to replace the seal in the gear box. Can anyone give me an idea where to get this info? Or maybe you can give me some instructions.

Earl has the right idea. I had a leaky gearbox on
my bushhog. A friend of mine told me to shoot about 10 to 15 shots of grease into it. Idid put in a liberal amount of grease and it is still working today about 5 years later. It' wortha try even if you have to do it every year. Hope this helps.

I've done the grease thing too. It's not 'correct' but it often works for a season, if you understand the slight risk to your gearset.....
